Evaluating and processing transfer credit requests from other institutions to ensure they meet RPI’s standards and requirements

Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) Transfer Credit Policy (Fall 2023 Catalog)

The Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) transfer credit policy applies to students who entered Fall 2023.

Advanced Placement (AP) Course Credit (as of Fall 2024)

A score of 4 or 5 on an accepted Advanced Placement (AP) exam will receive academic credit at Rensselaer.

Cambridge Assessment International A-Level Exams (as of Fall 2025)

Students who receive an A or B-level score on a Cambridge Assessment International Education exam may receive academic credit at Rensselaer.

Currently Enrolled Students

Currently enrolled students interested in taking courses at external institutions for transfer credit must receive approval before taking the course.

Dual Enrollment While in High School

Courses completed at other colleges or universities while in high school may be considered for transfer credit.

International Baccalaureate (IB) Credits (as of Fall 2025)

International Baccalaureate (IB) credits are awarded based on student performance on high-level exams. Standard-level exam scores are not accepted.

Students entering as first-time freshmen can apply a maximum of 32 transfer credit hours toward their Bachelor’s degree requirements and must complete all credit requests by the end of their first year.

Study Abroad

Course credits from RPI-affiliated study abroad programs do not count toward the maximum 32 transfer credits allowed. Course credits from non-affiliated study abroad programs count and a maximum of 16 course credits can be transferred.

Transfer Students

Undergraduate students entering as transfer students must complete four (4) full-time semesters and a minimum of 64 credits at Rensselaer, all of which will be applied to the baccalaureate degree.

Transferology is a nationwide network designed to help students explore their college transfer options. The goal is to save students time by providing a quick, intuitive way of getting college transfer credit questions answered.
