To participate in an Undergraduate Research Project or an Independent Study course, a faculty member must act as the instructor for the course. Please consult with your Adviser to ensure the course will contribute to your degree requirements.
Registration process update for Undergraduate Research Projects (URP) and Undergraduate Independent Study (UIS) starting FALL 2025.
URP Course Numbers: 2941/4941
UIS Course Numbers: 1940/2940/4940
*Summer 2025 registrations for URP and UIS will continue to be submitted via paper format and processed accordingly.
Undergraduate students will no longer submit physical forms to register for URP and/or UIS courses. Instead, students will register online via the Student Information System (SIS).
PROCESS:
- Discuss with your faculty member the desired URP/UIS
- Agree on the terms of the URP/UIS and the number of credit hours that will be assigned (1-4)
- The instructor will process an “Instructor Approval” override in SIS for the appropriate CRN (these should also be viewable on the class hour schedule)
- Log in to SIS and go to the Register Add/Drop link on the student tab, and enter the given CRN and submit (the name of the course will be generic, UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH PROJECT or UGRAD INDEPENDENT STUDY)
- After the course is verified as added, click on the credit hours for the CRN (it should be highlighted/underlined), which automatically defaults to 1, and update to the agreed-upon credits
- Check your class schedule to be sure everything is recorded properly
*PLEASE NOTE: The graduate-level independent study process has not changed, and students registering at that level (6940) must continue to submit forms with the instructor’s signature. Please submit those forms, as normal, via the Registrar’s Office ticket system, and our office will process them accordingly.
